The CLSA is an inclusive non-academic award – anyone can earn it. This award recognizes school participation and community service. There are two levels for Character, Leadership, and Service Award: (1) Recognition and (2) Award. Students earn points for activities at school and in the community. Suggested activities are listed on this application. In addition school-year activities, students are required to perform community service.

 

 

One of the most significant and special relationships CMS has with its Partners in Education is with the Coronado Schools Foundation (CSF). The Coronado Schools Foundation is committed to educational excellence for every student in the Coronado Unified School District. CMS and CSF working together believe in our community’s shared commitment to fund our children’s academic excellence befitting Coronado’s reputation and potential.

 

As a nonprofit organization, the Foundation raises funds to bridge the gap created by insufficient government funding to our public schools. These funds provide essential programs, materials, and equipment to help meet the District and community’s expectations of an exemplary education for every student.

 

We hope that every family supports their children's education by learning more about CSF and finding ways to get involved with this incredible organization.

 

 

CMS has a strong relationship with the City of Coronado’s Parks and Recreation Department. Parks and Recreation sponsor several programs that serve our middle school students. One of those happens almost every day of the school year at lunchtime where THREE staff members are provided to set up and guide recreation activities. Some of these activities include flag football and March Madness-related activities.

 

A second program run by Parks and Recreation is the Branch Out Adventures. These are longer events that happen on weekends and take place in the San Diego area. Past activities have included kayaking at La Jolla Shores, beach clean up days, mountain bike trips, and geo caching. At least one opportunity is offered every month. 

One of the more popular programs is known as Friday Night On the Strand (FNOS). This offers a safe place for students to go on Friday nights and takes place at the Parks and Recreation facility toward The Strand. The FNOS program runs three hours, providing activities, movies and snacks for the kids. 

 

 

Each February the Junior Optimist Club hosts a Pasta 4 Pennies fundraiser. This nation-wide campaign raises money for research by the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. For approximately three weeks every year, students collect pennies (and any other denominations of change) by placing 5-gallon water jugs in each homeroom. Students donate and compete by putting their spare change in the jugs. The homeroom class that brings in the most change wins and gets a pasta party sponsored by Olive Garden. This annual event has a special place in the heart of CMS because of the impact leukemia and lymphoma has had on the school community.

 

The Coronado Student And Family Enrichment (SAFE) is one of our partners in education.  SAFE is funded by the City of Coronado, has an executive board, hosts monthly meetings with a commission composed of members from the various schools, community organizations, and civic services.  The purpose of SAFE is to promote healthy lifestyle choices through sponsoring guest speakers, healthy living workshops, family education classes, and drug and alcohol awareness.

 

 

The Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) is a group of committed parents who are actively involved by being ambassadors to the school who support the school's mission, strategic plan and six pillars of character development. Parents can be involved in the PTO in various ways including, attendance at monthly meetings, getting involved on various committees, and providing resources such as time or donations. The PTO holds monthly meetings on the third Thursday of each month. They have an executive board, adhere to bylaws, and an active parent membership designed to assist the school in providing resources for student learning.

 

The mission of the Islander Sports Foundation is to responsibly raise funds to sustain Coronado School Sports. The foundation began as the Coronado All Sports Booster Club in 1994 by a group of supportive parents. Coronado schools has a 100 year history. ISF is committed to preservation of the highest quality academics and athletics that our schools have worked diligently to create and build upon. As a public school system, Coronado Schools are confronted with public funding cuts adversely affecting all aspects of education in Coronado. ISF stepped forward to preserve the middle school sports experiences as a club on behalf of the middle school students as budget dollars were cut. ISF actively seeks restricted and unrestricted grants on behalf of Coronado High School Athletics, and offers tax deductible options to donors. The Islander Sports Foundation is a California certified 501 [c] [3] non-profit, Federal Tax ID #33-0584000.
