Dear Parent or Guardian:
This month, Wednesday PE health classes will be holding a discussion about healthy body image in middle school. Discussions will occur on March 15 for 7th grade, March 22 for 6th grade, and April 19 for 8th grade. Few things are more central to our long-term health and happiness than how we view ourselves. Our body image is a vitally important part of our self-image. While issues involving body image are present in all age groups and both genders in our society, for middle school students the topic is complicated by the increased social pressures and physical and emotional shifts of the tween years.
In addition to offering facts and perspectives about healthy body image and the unique challenges of facing this age group, the class will engage students in discussing their approach to and understanding of wellness. Students will have a chance to identify and confront stereotypes presented in popular media, and discuss their process of becoming aware of and making choices towards healthy growth and maturation.
If you have a specific question or a concern, please contact Michael Crooker at michael.crooker@coronadousd.net or Elise Agrella-O’Rourke at elise.agrella@coronadousd.net in our counseling department.
