Sixth Grade Camp

Sixth Grade Camp

August 2017

Dear Sixth Grade Parents,

We are pleased to announce that plans are being made for your child’s attendance at Camp Cuyamaca the week of January 29- February 2, 2018.  Trained outdoor-education teachers will work with the children in the study of conservation, nature, science, and related subjects.  It is a period of learning and experimentation in a camp environment.  Most of our CMS teachers will accompany the students to camp and will remain with them during the full session.

The cost for the 2018 camp program is $350.00.  This charge includes the camp registration fee, food, lodging, insurance, and transportation to and from camp.  If you need financial assistance or arrangements to make payments, please contact CMS Administrative Assistant, Ms. Dollyanne Hutchins, and submit your request in writing.  We will do everything we can to accommodate your individual needs so that your child will not miss this wonderful opportunity.

Due to the rising cost of camp and the related costs associated with this once exciting, educational experience, we need your support more than ever.  Parents and interested community members are welcome to sponsor scholarships for additional children to go to camp or make charitable donations for school programs so we can make experiences like camp a reality for every child.  Please remember, your support of sending a child to camp and making donations for school programs are considered charitable contributions and fall under categories for tax benefits.  To learn more about supporting students and programs at CMS, as well as any questions you have about Outdoor Education School, please feel free to call Dollyanne Hutchins at 619-522-8921, ext. 3097, or e-mail her at:

Your child will be coming home with a letter and other information about camp in early November.   The Health and Registration forms will need to be completed and signed by the parent and must be returned to CMS by Friday, December 8, 2017.  Additionally, the cash payment or check for camp can be made payable to Coronado Middle School and must be returned to the CMS office by Tuesday, January 16, 2018..  Forms and information about camp are below.  Don't miss their open House on Sept. 16, 2017 from to 2:00 p.m.

Another Huge Success for Kids at Sixth Grade Camp!

Last year, over 225 CMS sixth grade students, along with their teachers, attended the San Diego County Office of Education’s outdoor education program, fondly known as 6th Grade Camp.  The SDCOE Camp Cuyamaca program has been in existence for over 65 years and the learning in the classroom at CMS is directly reinforced in this once and a lifetime hands-on experience.  Students learn how to apply science, math, arts, physical education and more through the facilitation of SDCOE certificated teachers and our own CMS 6th grade staff.

With the support of our CUSD staff, parents, and community members the 2016-2017 6th grade students will again have the opportunity to attend this exciting, educational experience this October! Thank you to all of the donors  who have over the years made this opportunity a reality for students who would not otherwise attend due to financial hardship.  Our sincerest appreciation goes out to all of you who provide scholarships to students .  The generosity of the community never ceases to amaze us, and I know this year will be no exception, as many people have already begun to offer their support for this once in a lifetime learning experience for our students.
